The Journey North: A Story of Discovery on an Alaska Cruise

Pre-Trip Information Alaska – UnCruise Adventures

I had no plans of going on an Alaska cruise initially. It was the sort of off-hand remark from a friend that you dismiss by the next day. Still, the notion lingered in my mind − the allure of chilled air alone or the prospect of gazing upon a region that still felt primal, unspoiled. Months later I was on the deck of a vessel, watching land disappear behind us as we headed up North.

The Dawn of Day One: A Living Silence

I froze when I opened the curtains that first day I woke up. Mountains − pointed, steep, and goddamn close impossible − loomed out of the sea. The ship slid through them without a sound, so nearly silent. Never experienced landscapes moving past my window, like scenes in a very slow film.

Then I understood why so many raves about an Alaska cruise. The view does not chase after you − you chase after the view. It dissects all roads and tracks and its eye stares ever up, forging forth some justified, pantheistic, new law. Each mile is a secret unearthed.

Wildlife That Appears Without Warning

Early that afternoon, a gentle voice on the PA system finally announced: “Whales on the port side.” Everyone rushed outside. And there they were big soft gentle. They emerged with a cool nonchalance, as if the ocean belonged to them.

The woman next to me leaned in and whispered, “I never thought I would cry on this trip.” I agreed silently. Observing these animals in their world, not ours, is grounding.

The experience was already worth the trip for that moment.

Ports with Stories Buried In Its Bones

Juneau, where the landscape was so grand that the buildings looked like LEGO bricks. I strolled through empty roads, then was standing in front of the Mendenhall Glacier. It was big, frozen, and glowing blue − yes, even beneath the clouds.

Wooden walkways leading up to old storefronts made the whole of Skagway feel like a movie set left behind in the gold prospectors wake. I found myself on a beautiful expansive train that went right to the edge of the cliffs line as the tracks were laid next to the sea. There was a gasp from someone on board at every turn.

When we got to Ketchikan, colorful, drizzly, and steeped in Native culture. It occurred to me that every port had its own spirit. None felt repeatable.

Memorable Experiences Even After Trip is Over

Then one night, just before dinner, the boat entered a scene of floating ice. The sound of pieces bumping together, gentle clinking, like glass. Then came a crack that sounded like thunder across the water − distant glacier calving.

Everyone stopped talking. Even the kids went quiet. And we were witnessing the nature rebuild itself in real time.

You never forget that kind of experience.

The Lesson I Took Home

When I stepped on the boat, I was thinking about puffy coats, brisk mornings, and nice scenery. What I did not expect though was how tranquil I was the end of it all. An Alaska cruise allows you to take your time. It expects nothing from you. It just calls out to you to slow down and listen.

Which is a blessing in a world that tends not to wait.

Alaska is simply waiting − silent, sable, majestic, prosaic, and willing to offer you even more that you think you are prepared for − if you ever want an adventure that could turn to be a story for years to come.
